Pilot and photographer, Long Nguyen, will cover how to obtain weather for mountain flying using satellite images, weather radar, wind aloft, and reading the visual cues for wind. He will also discuss the basics of mountain flying: understanding rate of turn, slow flight, recognize updraft and downdraft, using various maps to navigate around the mountain, recognize the illusion of rising terrain, and flying in the valley.
Long Nguyen is the Chief Pilot for Washington Air Search and Rescue as well as a Senior Check Pilot of Washington Wing Civil Air Patrol. He has flown many hours on searches in the Cascades and Olympic as well as taught lots of pilots the art of mountain flying for many years.
