LEARN TO FLY

Common Questions about earning your Pilot Certificate

How much does it cost to learn to fly and get a pilot certificate?
There are a lot of variables that affect the cost of learning to fly, including the frequency of flight lessons, weather conditions, type of aircraft but most importantly, your level of motivation. Coming prepared to each lesson will dramatically reduce the time and cost of training.  Please review our Cost Sheet for more information. Ask us about alternative financing options available.

How long does it take to learn to fly and get a pilot certificate?
The same variables that affect the cost of learning to fly will affect the time it takes to earn your certificate. The FAA has established the minimum number of flight hours needed to obtain a certificate. The minimum for a private pilot certificate under Part 61 is 40 flight hours but a true average is between 50 and 60 hours. These hours can be spread over a time span of several months to a year or more.

How can I find a good flight instructor & flight training school?
While we are based in the Seattle / Tacoma area, an internet search will provide you several options in your area. We highly recommend that you interview several and compare the cost, airplane types and flight instructors to determine a good match. Some larger flight training schools have a more structured curriculum while we can tailor the training syllabus to meet your particular schedule and goals.  It is important that you choose a knowledgeable instructor that provides an enjoyable training experience.

How much experience do you have instructing?
We have a wide variety of instructing experience ranging from UND Aerospace to small uncontrolled airports. Students include brand new pilots to teaching instructors how to teach. As airline pilots we have gained valuable experience in virtually all flying conditions that we use to impart good flying habits and decision-making skills.

How and where can I get a student pilot certificate?
An aviation medical examiner (AME) typically gives you a student pilot certificate to fill out as part of the third class medical exam. We can provide you a list of local AMEs to schedule your physical.

Some flight schools have aircraft with “glass cockpits” and others do not. Are there any advantages of training in either aircraft?
That depends on your personal goals. If you plan on buying an airplane with a glass cockpit then training in a plane with similar equipment may be beneficial. If you plan to fly recreationally in rental aircraft it is a good idea to be proficient in both. Glass cockpit airplanes are usually more expensive to operate so cost may factor into your decision.

What kinds of test to I have to take?
Each flight certificate or rating requires that the student complete three areas of competency, under the review of a person designated by the FAA to conduct the tests. Near the end of your flight training you will need to pass a written (knowledge) test. This is taken on a computer with multiple-choice questions and must be passed with a score of 70% or higher. When your training is complete your flight instructor will endorse you for the oral and practical exams. The FAA designated examiner will ask you questions to determine if you have sufficient knowledge of the subject matter. In the practical exam you will demonstrate to the examiner you can safely operate the airplane in accordance with set standards. The oral and practical typically happen on the same day as part of one appointment.
