Continuing Education

Staying sharp and current is vital for general aviation pilots, not only to enhance safety but also to meet regulatory requirements. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandates ongoing training and certifications to ensure pilots maintain their skills and knowledge, but proficiency often requires more than meeting the minimum standards.

VFR Proficiency

For pilots operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), completing a flight review every 24 months is a regulatory requirement. This includes at least one hour of ground instruction and one hour of flight time with an instructor to refresh key concepts and demonstrate proficiency.  The Rainier Flight Review takes it one step further by tailoring the training to your specific experience and goals.

However, maintaining sharpness between reviews is just as important. Set informal goals such as renting an airplane once a month and fly to a new location.  Or take advantage of a challenging weather day and grab an instructor to practise crosswind landings, night flying or safely handling MVFR conditions.  We are here to build on the basics and help you gain skill and confidence.

IFR Proficiency

For Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) pilots, proficiency and currency are two very different things.  While you may be technically current, maintaining proficiency should be the goal of every aviator.  Rainier strives to accomplish both through our Instrument Proficiency Program keeping you on top of your IFR game while always maintaining instrument currency for when you need it.

Stretch Your Knowledge and Skill

Beyond mandatory training, recurrent education offers opportunities for growth. Pilots can pursue formal advanced training, such as earning a high-performance or complex aircraft endorsement, to expand their skills and capabilities. These endorsements open the door to flying more advanced aircraft and can make everyday flying more efficient and enjoyable.

Ultimately, continuing education isn’t just about meeting FAA standards—it’s about being an informed, skilled, and confident pilot. Whether you’re maintaining proficiency with informal goals or pursuing advanced certifications, recurrent training ensures you stay safe and prepared for whatever challenges the skies bring.
